Raw Material Team in Autoliv:


Autoliv the global leader in automotive safety intends to establish a cross functional raw material management team embedded into Engineering and Supply Chain Management. The team is not only the technical decision authority for all raw material related activities in line with internal & external standards and regulations but also a key driver when it comes to VEVA cost reduction, material innovation, overseen trends and approving raw material suppliers.


Raw Material VA/VE, cost reduction by creating a solid pipeline of feasible ideas with full accountability until implementation.

  • Material innovation
  • Oversee market trends related to raw material
  • Establish demand & supply model
  • Reduce time to market for material & process innovations, accelerate process innovation cycle
  • Reduce complexity of material variants / grades used by defining the raw material roadmap, in line with 1P1P roadmap
  • Ensure global availability of materials in line with regulations standards
  • Execute and input to the segment strategy defined by global SCM teams on raw material.
  • Technical decision instance of all raw material related activities (flagging, specifications and more) 

About the position of Global Material Manager Non Ferrous / Coating

Job Summary 

  • Identification of raw material VEVA ideas, exploring raw material opportunities.
  • Lead feasibility studies with selected raw material suppliers
  • Bring material expertise and specialist knowledge into our product and component development and sourcing processes (serial, pre-serial, early development).
  • Drive VEVA implementation jointly with change managers and engineering.
  • Execute global segment (strategy) with material knowledge (into the division)
  • Support standardization & specifications
  • Gain / share market und raw material (supplier) insights. Bring know how to Autoliv’s engineering organization.
  • Support quality initiatives and approval of new sources
  • Run “Supplier Technology Days” with Raw Material Supplier (workshops at supplier)
  • Establishing contacts and networking with ALV material experts and external expert like universities and other institutes. Support engineering and project team on material selection for get cost, performance, package and weight improvement.


  • As member of the global material team
    • Co-operation globally with Materials Team members reporting dotted line.
    • Represent local and regional needs
    • Drive internal material specifications and standards
  • Monitor technological development on material: New ideas to improve cost, performance, package, weight,… and submit related GDP or VEVA ideas
  • Analyze, alert, and propose alternatives according to new  REACH / AS5 / Customers specifications and compliance
  • As Member of global GPM team
    • Establish preferred material lists, qualify new strategic materials to achieve cost, performance, package and weight improvement.
    • Review red material deviation approval (RMDA) -> evaluate options with project team, same for New Material Request (NMR)
  • Train people
    • Create training material, train people
    • Identify training needs in collaboration with department managers
  • Materials advance knowledge: mechanical properties; chemical composition (influence of different substance, etc.);
  • Comparison of different materials (steel grades, plastics, etc.)
  • Legal requirements  advanced – always up-to-date (REACH);
  • Standards & Norms advance knowledge (e.g. ISO, EN, ASTM, JST, etc.) Understand customer needs (requirements through engineering teams)        

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Basic Education Bachelor's Degree (3-4 years) MSc/BSc in Materials Science or equivalent
  • Further education in economics desired Strong affiliation to IT / simulation / big data analysis
  • At least 3-5 years background in project management, consulting or industrial background from basic material / processing companies
  • Strong leadership and capacity to drive technical improvements internally and with our supplier. Proven experience as project / team leader- knowledge about material science or strong process knowledge 
  • Profound knowledge in application and processing
  • Proficient in analysis methods and materials testing 
  • Quality management methods
